New vaccine machine in Hawaii for cancer treatment

Doctors say it's the first Food and Drug Administration-approved cancer vaccine that has arrived in Hawaii.

Blood Bank of Hawaii is providing a groundbreaking medical procedure that was only available on the mainland.

The new cell collection center helps battle prostate cancer. Dr. David Tamura said about 850 patients get diagnosed with prostate cancer a year in Hawaii. .

Dr. Randal Covin said, "Instead of collecting platelets from donors we are going to be collecting white cells from the patient. Those white cells may then be further processed and then re-infused in the patient to provide a type of cellular therapy."

Doctors said this new machine in Hawaii will allow patients to skip traveling to the mainland.

Tamura said it can extend a cancer patient's lifespan by up to five years.
