LAHAINA, Hawaii -

The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas in Maui presents a timeless holiday tradition with a hybrid-ice rink for skating in the tropics.

It's open to resort guests and non-resort guests.

"Skating By The Sea, A Ka'anapali Holiday" was unveiled on Nov. 28.  It's the first amongst resorts in Hawaii to offer this experience only available in cooler climates.

The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas transformed its outdoor Ocean Lawn into a holiday escape complete with a 1,000 square feet hybrid ice skating rink offering magnificent views of the warm Pacific and frolicking humpback whales.

According to the resort's general manager Angela Nolan, the skating rink will comfortably hold up to 15 persons.

"This unique idea was introduced by Robert Megargle, the resort's director of food & beverage who had implemented a similar program in partnership with BH Skating International in downtown Manhattan," said Nolan. "The rink’s surface is made with a synthetic polymer and finished with a natural glide for a real ice feel, allowing the use of ice skates. This is an environmentally sound alternative to real ice as it doesn’t need refrigeration units, generators or electricity."

The fun-filled activity can be enjoyed Mondays to Fridays from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and from 1 p.m. on weekends.  It will be offered daily through Jan. 2, 2013.

As a guideline, the rink can be used by children ages seven and older with a minimum height of 42 inches.
