When a robber held up the First Niagara Bank at the corner of Shiloh and West Sycamore streets on Mt. Washington, he ran into trouble he hadn't counted on: the owner of the coffee shop next door chasing him across the neighborhood as he ran off with the money.

Grand Brew owner Howard Todd told Channel 4 Action News' Bob Mayo that the bank robber actually fired at him. Todd said he was outside his coffee shop on Shiloh Street on Wednesday afternoon when a woman he knows came out of the bank and approached him.

"She calmly said to me, 'Todd, somebody's robbing the bank.' I turned my head to go towards the bank, I saw that person coming out of the bank, all in black. Black on black on black, face covered, kind of stuck out like a sore thumb," said Todd.

Todd said the robber strolled around the corner, but when he shouted, 'hey,' the robber took off.

"I ran right after him, and we ran probably about 50 yards, and he stopped and he turned and pointed a gun at me and he shot it. As he was pointing at me, I kind of dove into the hedges. He shot, I got up," said Todd. He then grabbed his own crude weapon of choice.

"I was even more mad. I picked up a couple of bricks. I started chasing him down the road, and as I was chasing him down Beam Way, I whipped a brick at the vehicle I saw he was getting in. He was obviously the passenger, not the driver, and I just missed the truck," said Todd.

Todd kept running after the getaway vehicle, hoping to shatter a window with a rock, but he said the robber dropped some cash as he fled.

"It looks to me like he did, because where the car, the SUV was situated, that's where the money also laid," said Todd.

Todd said he believes "the only way to stop crime is by stopping it. I can tell you this, he better not come up here again. I'll catch him the next time, for sure."

The FBI and Pittsburgh police are investigating the bank robbery.
