Police in Worcester said two young children were found alone Friday in an apartment following the death of their mother days earlier.

Sgt. Kerry Hazelhurst said the woman died of a drug overdose and may have been dead for up to five days inside the Green Hill Parkway apartment.

Neighbor Ryan Cicero lives on the third floor with his girlfriend and a friend. He said the woman had two kids -- a five-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl.

“Cute little kids. God bless them,” he said. “I wish I had known earlier.”

Cicero said when the property manager went to collect rent, he noticed something was wrong.

“He was knocking on the door, the kids answered through voice, and they were like, 'Mommy's sleeping,'" Cicero said.

The boy had to stand on a chair to let the manager in.

After going inside, the manager discovered the body of the woman in her 30s. Police have not identified her.

Neighbor Robin Flagg said she had met the woman before but knew she was struggling with addiction.

“I knew there were issues going on in that building,” Flagg said. “I hope everything's OK with the kids, and they're in the right place getting taken care of.”

The children were taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester to be evaluated.
