Santa Fe police are investigating what they say is a bizarre case, after a man is accused of biting the tip of his ex-girlfriend’s big toe down to the bone.

Police arrested Daniel Anaya, 27, Wednesday and charged him with aggravated battery and burglary. Investigators say Anaya broke into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment and asked if he could smell her feet. She refused and that’s when police say Anaya got violent. They say he slammed the victim against the wall, took off her socks and shoes and then took bites out of her toe nail and toe flesh.

Anaya’s ex-girlfriend told police the reason she broke up with him after four years was because back in November he bit her other big toe.

“That's when she thought this was going to extremes and she no longer wanted to be involved in this relationship,” explained Capt. Aric Wheeler, Santa Fe Police. “It's odd. Extremely odd.”

Another twist to this strange story, Anaya works in the shoe department of a local department store. Police say he’s also a college student in Santa Fe.
