WAIPAHU, Hawaii -

A mother has given birth to a baby boy on an Oahu freeway during rush-hour traffic.

Emergency Medical Services Assistant Chief Wayne Kruse says the woman in labor got caught in heavy rush-hour traffic in west Oahu Wednesday morning.

Police were escorting her to the hospital but the birth was progressing too quickly so paramedics were called to help.

Kruse says the healthy baby boy was born on the side of the freeway near the Kunia off-ramp at 7:17 a.m.

Mother and son were then transported to a hospital.

It was the second time in recent days EMS and police helped deliver a baby on the H-1 freeway.  A 23-year-old woman gave birth to a baby girl Friday near a Honolulu off-ramp.
