Battered Serena Williams expressed relief that her exit from the Australian Open was at the hands of American teenage prodigy Sloane Stephens.

The 15-time Grand Slam champ lost to 19-year-old Stephens after she suffered from a twisted ankle and a back problem early in the quarterfinals.

"I'm almost relieved that it's over, because there's only so much I felt I could do," William said. "It's been a little difficult. I've been thrown a lot of balls this week."

Her back injury, which limited her serve and movement in court, was aggravated when she chased a drop shot in the eight game of the second set.

"I couldn't really rotate after that," she explained.

For her part, Stephens kept her composure and concluded the match with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win.

Williams praised the young tennis player's performance. "I think my opponent played well and was able to do a really good job," she said.
