TheBus route changes starting this Sunday

Starting Sunday the Department of Transportation is modifying 13 bus routes across O'ahu, and many riders are scrambling to cope with the changes.

Oahu Transit Services released changes to TheBus routes that take effect Sunday, June 3.  All changes will be monitored and subject to modifications.

Peak travel periods are approximately 4:30 a.m. through 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. through 6 p.m. (depending on the route).  The "Base Period" is Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and weekends.

Route 1:  Kaimuki - Kalihi

  • WEEKDAY headway change:  Base period, from 12 to 15 minutes. PEAK TRAVEL PERIODS (MONDAY - FRIDAY) WILL NOT BE AFFECTED.

Route 5:  Ala Moana - Manoa

  • WEEKDAY headway change:  Peak hours, from 30 to 55 minutes.

Route 43:  Waipahu - Honolulu - Alapai

  • PEAK TRAVEL PERIODS (MONDAY - FRIDAY) WILL NOT BE AFFECTED.
  • Discontinue SATURDAY/SUNDAY service.

Route C:  Country Express!  Makaha - Honolulu

  • PEAK TRAVEL PERIODS (MONDAY - FRIDAY) WILL NOT BE AFFECTED.
  • WEEKDAY headway change:  Base period from 30 to 45 minutes.
  • SATURDAY headway change:  All day from 30 to 60 minutes.
  • SUNDAY headway change:  All day from 30 to 60 minutes.


Route E:  Country Express!  Ewa Beach - Honolulu - Waikiki

  • PEAK TRAVEL PERIODS (MONDAY - FRIDAY) WILL NOT BE AFFECTED.
  • All services turn back at downtown:
    • MAKAI-BOUND on Punchbowl FS Halekauwila EAST to Bishop/Hotel, continue on Bishop, left King (service King/Punchbowl stop), right Punchbowl to terminus farside of Punchbowl/Halekauwila.  Continue WEST via Punchbowl, right Ala Moana, resuming regular route.

  • SUNDAY headway change:  All day from 30 to 60 minutes.

Route B:  City Express! Kalihi - Waikiki

  • Discontinue route, see improvement to Route 2.

Route 2:  Waikiki - School - Middle

  • PEAK TRAVEL PERIODS (MONDAY - FRIDAY) WILL NOT BE AFFECTED.
  • Increase frequency to compensate for discontinuation of Route B.

Route 53:  Pacific Palisades - Honolulu

  • PEAK TRAVEL PERIODS (MONDAY - FRIDAY) WILL NOT BE AFFECTED.
  • SATURDAY/SUNDAY Conversion to shuttle:
    • On Saturdays and Sundays a shuttle service will be provided between Pacific Palisades and Pearl City.
      • EASTBOUND:  Pacific Palisades (Komo Mai/Aumakua Terminus) to Waiawa (Kamehameha Highway/Acacia Road) - TheBus will travel from the Komo Mai/Aumakua terminus, left on Aumakua, left on Komo Mai, right on Waimano Home Road, right on Kamehameha Highway, left on Farrington Highway, left on Waiawa Road, left on Farrington Highway, Kamehameha Highway to Acacia Road.
      • WESTBOUND:  Waiawa (Kamehameha Highway/Acacia Road) to Pacific Palisades (Komo Mai/Aumakua Terminus) - TheBus will travel on Kamehameha Highway, left on Waimano Home Road, left on Komo Mai, right on Aumaukua, left on Auhuhu, left on Komo Mai to Board of Water Supply Pumping Station at Komo Mai/Aumakua.


Route 52:  Wahiawa - Circle Island

  • PEAK TRAVEL PERIODS (MONDAY - FRIDAY) WILL NOT BE AFFECTED
  • WEEKDAY headway change:  All day, from 40 to 30 minutes
  • Terminate route at Wahiawa Heights via Wahiawa Transit Center (most trips):
    • EAST from Wahiawa Heights via Wahiawa TC to Honolulu.
    • WEST from Honolulu to Wahiawa Heights via Wahiawa TC.
    • Replaces Route 62 Wahiawa Heights portion.


Route 55:  Kaneohe - Circle Island

  • PEAK TRAVEL PERIODS (MONDAY - FRIDAY) WILL NOT BE AFFECTED
  • Extend route to Wahiawa Transit Center via North Shore:
    • WEST to Turtle Bay, continue to Wahiawa TC via Haleiwa.
    • EAST to Ala Moana from Wahiawa TC via Haleiwa and Kaneohe.
  • WEEKDAY headway change:  All day from 40 to 60 minutes.

Route 62:  Wahiawa Heights - Honolulu

  • PEAK TRAVEL PERIODS (MONDAY - FRIDAY) WILL NOT BE AFFECTED
  • Terminate route at Wahiawa Transit Center.
    • Wahiawa Heights portion replaced by Route 52 extension.
    • EAST from Wahiawa TC to Alapai TC.
    • WEST from Alapai TC to Wahiawa TC.
  • Terminate route at Alapai TC.

Route 65:  Kahaluu - Honolulu

  • PEAK TRAVEL PERIODS (MONDAY - FRIDAY) WILL NOT BE AFFECTED
  • Realign to use Kahekili Highway.
    • BOTH DIRECTIONS on Haiku at Alaloa.
      • WEST to Kamehameha/Haiku, left Haiku, right Kahekili, left Ahuimanu Road, left Ahuimanu Place, right Hui Ulili, left Hui Iwa, cross Kahekili, to Hui Iwa/Kahekili.
      • EAST via Hui Iwa, left Kahekili, left Haiku, resuming regular route.
  • Terminate route at Bishop/Merchant:
    • MAKAI-BOUND on Bishop NS Merchant.
    • EAST to terminus at Bishop/Merchant.  Continue WEST via Bishop, left Queen, left Alakea, resuming regular route.
  • ALL SERVICES headway change:  All day from 70 to 60 minutes.

Route 231:  Hawaii Kai - Hahaione Valley

  • Discontinue route.
