Here are some tips from the National Weather Service on how to stay safe during a tornado.

  • The safest place to be is underground like in a basement.
  • If you don't have a basement: A small, windowless interior room or hallway on the lowest level of the sturdy building is the safest alternative.
  • Mobile homes are not safe during tornadoes. The National Weather Service says you should abandon mobile homes and get to the nearest sturdy building you can find.

Being outside in severe weather is never a good idea, but if you get caught outside and can't find shelter you should:

  • Get back into your car and buckle you seat belt.
  • Drive to the closest sturdy shelter.
  • If debris starts flying around while you are driving pull over and park.
  • Stay in your vehicle with your seat belt on.
  • Try to get your head below the windows and cover it with your hands and a blanket if you have one.
