KAPAA, Hawaii -

The 65-year-old man from New York, who drowned Saturday in waters off Lydgate Beach, has been identified as David Nichols.

According to Kauai fire officials, Nichols was swimming with his daughter in a part of the beach known as Kitchens.  His daughter swam back to shore, but later became concerned for Nichols' welfare and called 911.

Just before 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, rescuers found the man unresponsive about 25 yards off shore.  Rescuers pulled Nichols out of the water and performed CPR.

He was transported to Wilcox Hospital, where he died.  This is the third ocean drowning on Kauai this year.
