Woman, 32, dies in Makiki motorcycle collision
Thirty-two-year-old Helen Hites is dead after a crash in Makiki Sunday afternoon.
The accident happened around 1 p.m. on Thurston Ave. near Wilder Ave. The motorcycle crashed into a black Dodge Charger. Pedestrians walking up Thurston Ave. said it all happened so fast.
"At the top is a blind spot and all I heard was a 'boof,' I knew the motorcycle hit something," said George Moses.
The 49-year-old driver of the car said he's an off-duty taxi driver. He was going westbound on Thurston avenue, making a left turn into a driveway when he collided with the motorcycle, which was going the opposite way.
Police say speed was not a factor in the accident. But some witnesses disagree, and the taxi driver told KITV4 he believes the motorist was going 60 mph.
"The speed limit is 25 mph here, but they go too fast... like they were racing," said the taxi driver.
"She was going pretty fast," said Moses.
Witnesses said the woman was riding with other motorcyclists up the hill on a street that neighbors consider dangerous.
Police said the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. She was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition where she later died. The driver of the car only had minor injuries.
Police shut down Thurston Avenue as they investigated. No other injuries were reported.
