No more Zippy's chili and chicken at Ala Moana. The restaurant is closing its Sears location at the end of the month.

HONOLULU -

No more Zippy's chili and chicken at Ala Moana Center.

The restaurant is closing its Sears location at the end of the month.

For many, the site is much more than a restaurant.

"It is home because people have been here for ages," said Diana Hayes. "You know, I've lived here almost 20 years now. I live in Kailua now, but I still come down here because I like the people in Zippy's here."

For others, this Zippy's is comfortable and convenient.

"Some shopping, then I come here and have some of my favorite meal," said Nanakuli resident Herman Kelii. "I'm going to miss it. Too bad we (are) going to lose out over here."

Also losing out, the location's 30 or so employees.

Zippy's Ala Moana manager Sarah Keener said, "They're sad because they're not going to be working with the same people. You know, you're used to the same people that you work with every morning, every night that you close with. So, it's a bit of a challenge for some of the long timers."

Zippy's says all of its employees at Ala Moana have been reassigned to other locations.

"Actually, our original closing date was June 2," Keener said. "So we had some time to plan for them."

June 2 is the day Sears will be shutting its doors and the department store has been preparing for this closure for months.

Zippy's president Paul Yokota said, "As they start winding down their business, as they start winding down their appliance business or their automotive business, our customer traffic is going to be reduced substantially. So it's the appropriate time. Ala Moana has been a very positive experience for us and we have been in discussions, but nothing has been finalized with Ala Moana Center."
