KIHEI, Hawaii -

A Maui Times Supermarket remains closed after a loud explosion and white cloud appeared Wedneday night.

Maui firefighters responded to calls about the incident at the supermarket off South Kihei Road. Crews reported seeing the white cloud upon arrival, but it shortly dissipated.

The store was evacuated with about 30 employees and customers in the parking lot prior to MFD arrival. Maul police closed South Kihei Road, fronting the store and West Lipoa on the South side of the store. Roads were reopened approximately 30 minutes later.

Two employees complaining of dizziness and shortness of breath were treated on scene. Both refused transport to the hospital. The store remains closed.
Fire officials says a compressor that runs the refrigeration for the chillers blew creating the explosion and the white vapor cloud. A hazmat crew is investigating and repair crews are standing by. Repairs will take place as soon as it is determined safe for repairs to take place.
