HONOLULU -

The city says the Beretania Street side of Thomas Square opened on Wednesday.

The orange fencing will remain on around the grass and the new keiki hedges to help them grow and avoid getting trampled on.

Crews are putting in poles in the ground on the makai side of the sidewalk to open the sidewalk but keep the fencing around the grass and hedge area.

There are also floral planters on the sidewalk.

The city closed the sidewalk in early March to trim the trees at the park.

Protesters with deOccupy Honolulu moved to the King Street side of the park.  When crews closed that sidewalk on April 22, protesters moved to the sidewalk fronting the Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall.  Last week, city crews moved protesters away from the bus stop.   Tents from deOccupy Honolulu were back with their tents away from the bus stop.  The city is planning to install planters on that sidewalk as well.
