Big Island committee rejects Sunshine Law change

The Big Island is blocking attempts by other counties to change Hawaii's Sunshine Law.
A Hawaii County Council committee has rejected a proposal from Maui County to create an exemption to the law. West Hawaii Today reported Wednesday that means it will be removed from a package of initiatives to be presented to the state Legislature for its upcoming 2014 session.
The bill wants to allow more than two council members to meet and discuss without having to take minutes or make reports on the discussion, as long as the meetings are open to the public.
South Kona/Kau Councilwoman Brenda Ford says the bill is poorly written and leaves room for abuse.
All four counties must approve a bill for it to be sent to the Legislature.
Last month, a Kauai County Council committee struck down a funding request for a University of Hawaii at Hilo pharmacy building.
