According to police, the crash happened north of Shower Drive on Highway 130, also known as Keaau-Pahoa Road, around 5 a.m. Sunday.
Traffic investigators reported that the collision happened when a 26-year-old Hilo man, in a 2010 Subaru, was driving away from Pahoa on the highway and overtook another car.
That's when he collided with a 52-year-old Keaau man, in a 2013 Ford pickup, driving in the opposite direction.
The 26-year-old was killed as a result, while the other driver suffered minor injuries.
The surviving motorist was arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Police are investigating whether the 26-year-old was intoxicated as well.
Neither car was carrying any other passengers.
Police closed Highway 130 for about five hours while they investigated.
