A Honomu man convicted of manslaughter has been sentenced to 10 years probation and time served.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports Daniel Schuster pleaded guilty in September to stabbing to death his housemate, 30-year-old Joshua Trickel, on July 12, 2012.
Schuster must complete 400 hours of community service and other probation conditions.
Schuster was originally charged with second-degree murder. He made the plea deal with the support of Trickel's mother.
Leslie Peters says she wants to give Schuster a chance to change his life. She says she doesn't believe Schuster tried to kill her son.
During a preliminary hearing, a woman who lived in the same building testified the men were trying to raise money owed to a drug dealer and that Schuster told her Trickel had stabbed him first.
