Body of missing swimmer from Calif. found off Kaanapali
Maui fire officials say the body of a missing swimmer was found Thursday morning by a fire department helicopter.
The body was spotted about 30 feet below the ocean surface and about 70 feet from the shoreline just north of the black rock area fronting the Kaanapali Villas.
The 41-year-old man, a visitor from California, was last seen entering the water on Wednesday at 2:45 p.m. He had a snorkel and mask but no fins, according to fire officials.
The man was reported missing by friends at around 6:50 p.m. Lahaina fire crews and a rescue squad from Kahului searched the immediate ocean and shoreline areas.
The Coast Guard was notified at 7 p.m. and assisted in the search with a Cutter and helicopter.
The search was suspended at 2 a.m. Thursday and resumed at sunrise. At 6:10 a.m. the body was found.
