An Oakland man's impromptu pit stop proved costly Wednesday evening when his car rolled into Salmon Lake in Belgrade.

Chief Deputy Everett Flannery of the Kennebec County Sheriff's Department said Michael Leighton, 32, told police he needed to go to the bathroom so he decided to go to the Spaulding Point Boat Landing. Leighton said he stopped his 2007 Mitsubishi Galant and put on the emergency brake but forgot to put the car in park.

Flannery said Leighton stepped away from the car to relieve himself. Leighton turned around when he heard a splash, Flannery said, but by that time the car was in the lake.

Ron Stewart of D & R Hauling and Towing of Belgrade, which removed the car from the water, said the car is likely ruined.
