A nail salon manager is recovering after a rivalry with another salon escalated with an assault.

WLWT News 5's Brian Hamrick said that the incident began on April 12 when an employee of Escape Nails and Spa in Hyde Park Plaza began walking up and down Edwards Road near another salon, Ambiance Nail Salon and Spa.

Escape's manager, Chanh Luong, told Hamrick that Ambiance workers confronted his employee and told him to leave, but Luong told the employee to stay.

A short time later, Luong said, several Ambiance employees came to Escape and assaulted Luong, shoved an Escape worker to the ground and damaged a chair and other products inside.

"I was standing in the parking lot and they came over and just jumped me," Luong said. "They punched me about my head, neck and back."

Police arrived and arrested one man, John Nguyen, and charged him with assault and criminal damaging. A man by that name is listed in online documents as being an owner of the salon.

Nguyen has pleaded not guilty.

Police records show another woman was pushed to the ground.

Employees said the men ransacked the salon and threatened another female employee, who told WLWT News 5 one of the men told her not to mess with his business.

Luong said he was briefly hospitalized and on pain medications for a week after the assault.
