City budget committee kills mayor's trash fee proposal
The City Council Budget Committee has killed Mayor Kirk Caldwell's proposal for a $10 monthly fee for weekly refuse service.
City Council Chair Ernie Martin said Wednesday that the mayor cannot include the fee in the 2015 budget.
Currently, the city does not charge for trash pickups.
Last week, Caldwell went before the council to sell them on the idea. He highlighted the city's projected budget deficit and the escalating cost of labor contracts. He says in light of the collective bargaining contracts that have come in over the past year, in the upcoming fiscal year that will be more than $50 million in added wages and other expenditures.
The garbage fee proposal would have raised about $21 million annually for a service that costs the city $100 million per year.
