A bill that would make it more difficult for the homeless to erect tents on city sidewalks was deferred in committee.

Bill 6 would have made the presence of tents or other objects on sidewalks illegal without a permit.

Councilman Ikaika Anderson, who introduced the measure, says the bill was deferred as he works on another bill.

Under the new proposal, Bill 3, police could immediately cite anyone who erects a sidewalk nuisance.

The bill will be heard by the full council in late January.
