Three times a week. That's how often the city plans on clearing out homeless encampments.
Dozens of crews removed the tarps and makeshift housing in Iwilei Friday morning. Ever since the sidewalk nuisance ordinance took effect last summer, the city says they've done about 200 enforcement efforts.
Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell says these frequent cleanups will hopefully move the homeless off the streets and into the shelters.
"This constant going back and going to places where there are a lot of complaints and picking up what's placed on sidewalks and opening it up again makes a difference and, in certain areas, it's changed the habits of people," said Caldwell.
The city's even hired an extra crew which conducts cleanups at all hours of the night. So far, the cleanups have cost the city $330,000.
