HONOLULU -

Honolulu police say lanes on Kapiolani Boulevard near Kamakee Street were closed after a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on Tuesday.

It happened at around 11:45 a.m. near McKinley High School.

The vehicle was traveling westbound on Kapiolani Boulevard when the vehicle hit a 22-year-old Honolulu man crossing Kapiolani Boulevard.

"A witness told us that he was just walking a little fast, but not running," said Lt. Bobby Towne of the Honolulu Police Department's Traffic Division.  "It's both sides that need to be watching for both.  Drivers need to be watching for pedestrians and pedestrians need to make eye contact with drivers."

Police say the pedestrian was about 20 feet outside of the crosswalk.  The man was hospitalized in critical condition with head and internal injuries.

Investigators say speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.

The lanes were reopened by 2 p.m.
