H1 freeway crash
HONOLULU -

Honolulu police reopened two eastbound lanes of the H1 freeway Thursday afternoon in Aiea after a traffic incident in which a pickup truck went off the highway.

Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said the truck, a Ford F-250, was towing a trailer with an excavator on it when somehow the truck and trailer separated.

The truck went off the freeway and landed on an embankment, Seelig said.

The truck could have rolled down the embankment to nearby businesses including an ice cream parlor were it not for trees which stopped its momentum, according to Seelig.

The trailer flipped on its side sending the excavator onto the shoulder of the freeway.

The driver of the pickup truck apparently was not seriously hurt, Seelig said.

The driver had climbed back onto the freeway by the time firefighters arrived.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. just past the Kaahumanu Street overpass.
