The Coast Guard reported that Dayne Ortiz was kayaking off Makaleha Beach Park about 6 p.m. Saturday when his kayak overturned. His brother swam out to help Ortiz right the kayak but could not reach him and returned to shore, according to the Coast Guard.
Several Coast Guard units including a search and rescue helicopter from Barbers Point and the Cutter Ahi from Honolulu joined the search.
The Honolulu Fire Department's search and rescue team was assisting in the search with units in the water and with its helicopter.
Ortiz is described by police as 18-years-old, about 6-feet tall and 175 pounds. He was wearing black swim trunks. The Coast Guard says he was not wearing a life jacket.
