Driver escapes semi-trailer truck fire in Honoka'a

HONOKA`A, Hawaii -

Big Island fire officials say the driver of a semi-trailer truck safely escaped from the flames after fire crews found the cab of the truck on fire in Honoka'a early Thursday.

Firefighters responded to the 32-mile marker on Hawaii Belt Road just after 3:30 a.m.

Fire crews found the cab of the truck engulfed in flames at the scene.  The truck was pulling 8,300 gallons of diesel fuel.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and keep the flames from reaching the diesel tank.

Damage to the semi-trailer truck cab was estimated at $40,000.  The diesel tank was saved with minimal damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The highway was closed in both directions until just after 7:30 a.m.
