An injured dog was found and given to the Hawaiian Humane Society. The dog, named Maui, will need extensive surgery for an injury from tightly-tied twine cutting into the dog's body near its legs.

Kau'i Keola loves dogs and noticed a stray dog hiding in her garage in Halawa Heights over the weekend.

"We could see that the nylon rope tied on extremely tight in her flesh quite deeply," said Keola.  "She's so very skittish.  She's been through some trauma in her life."

It's an injury veterinarians at the Hawaiian Humane Society have been near a dog's neck, but never near its hind legs.

"This probably looks like an unfortunate accident and sometimes when animals get into a situation where they get tangled in something, they get scared then they won't let people near them to help them because they're trying to run away from whatever's happening to them, " said Dr. Aleisha Swartz.

The Humane Society says Maui the dog will need extensive surgery and will need about a month of recovery time for injuries.

"Unfortunately, the rope is embedded through the skin all the way around.  We need to get that out of there and then see what damage is it.  Skin damage or is it something more?" said Dr. Swartz.

"I've already gotten attached and now we're saying goodbye," said Keola.  "Yeah I get emotional."

Maui the dog is recovering from surgery.  The veterinarian says the dog may require more surgeries to fully heal.
