Life for the parents of a newborn came to a screeching halt on his birthday.

Mark and Kelly Thompson, of Penacook, delivered their son together in the front seat of their minivan.

Jacob Thompson came into the world at a speed that was no match for the vehicle.

"I think back, and I think, 'Oh my gosh. Did I really give birth in the front seat of my car?' That's not really how it's supposed to go," Kelly Thompson said.

Kelly Thompson said she started experiencing intense labor pains. She called her husband, who works as a nurse, and told him to come home right away.

"By the time he came home 15 minutes later, they went from a two to maybe 100. I couldn't move. I couldn't walk. I couldn't talk," Kelly Thompson said.

"I tried to get her down to the car, and I was waiting for in between contractions, and there wasn't any," Mark Thompson said.

The Thompsons managed to get into their minivan and started heading toward the hospital, but their baby was on the way and was moving even faster.

"All of a sudden, that urge came, and it was like, 'Oh my gosh, Mark, you need to pull over now. Call 911. He's coming. Jacob is coming now," Kelly Thompson said.

Mark Thompson called 911 and began to help his wife.

"I remember putting my feet up on the dashboard and putting my hand down, and I could feel his head. I was like, 'Oh my gosh,'" Kelly Thompson said.

Paramedics arrived almost immediately after Jacob was born. He weighed 6 pounds 13 ounces and is healthy.

To his parents, Jacob is a blessing.

"I can't say enough about my husband and how wonderful he was," Kelly Thompson said.

Jacob is the family's fourth child. Everyone is doing well, and they should leave the hospital Saturday.
