28 displaced after fire damages 2 Kahuku homes

KAHUKU, Hawaii -

Honolulu fire officials say 28 people were displaced due to fires at two homes in Kahuku Wednesday morning.

A home on Leleuli Street suffered significant fire damage after crews responded at around 10 a.m., according to fire officials.  Eighteen people lived in the house.

The fire extended to a neighboring home, which suffered moderate damage.  Ten people lived in that house.

No injuries were reported due to the fire.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Damage is estimated at $490,000 to the house where there fire began.  Damage to the neighboring house is estimated at $20,000.

Thirty-five firefighters from Windward Oahu and the North Shore were dispatched to battle the blaze.

The Red Cross is helping affected residents with food, shelter and clothing.
