HONOLULU -

Honolulu fire crews responded to Auahi Street Monday afternoon for an underground fire.

The fire was reported just after 5:30 p.m. near Keawe Street.

Fire officials say the flames were extinguished at 6:17 p.m.

Sewer line work was about to begin in the area and officials tell us wooden shoring that was smoldering fell into the trench and caused the flames.

At around 6:20 p.m., police announced that Keawe Street, from Ala Moana Boulevard to Pohukaina Street, and Auahi Street, from Punchbowl Street to Coral Street, were closed due to the fire.

The road was reopened by 9 p.m.
