Six couples are getting ready to be wed, and waiting for the clock to strike 12.

HONOLULU -

In Waikiki, six couples were among the first to take part in the first same-sex marriage ceremonies in Hawaii just after midnight on Monday.

Anxious couples lined up at the Mayor's Office of Culture and Arts to prepare for their special day on Sunday.

Many couples say they have waited decades for the chance to marry.

"Since the opportunity is here to do it now, why wait any longer?" said Shawna Okami.  "I think 32 years is long enough waiting.  Five minutes after 12 o'clock was asking too much at this point."

The ceremonies were held at the Sheraton Waikiki.
