A number of travelers were trying to get out of the islands before Thursday’s storm hit.
At the Honolulu International Airport, where several airlines started canceling flights, local residents and visitors were glad to get on departing flights Thursday afternoon.
One group from California was visiting for a family reunion. They were worried because their return flights are spread across the next three days.
“There are 22 of us,” said California resident Dave Jameson. “We are lucking out, but we are hoping that the rest of the family gets out OK.”
A local family got one of its members on a flight a day ahead of schedule in order to make a convention before heading back to school in Baltimore.
“I am really relieved,” said Kathy Fung of Honolulu. “I just need him to get out to LA so he can do what he is doing, and then he will get to Maryland and life will be good.”
Meanwhile, other visitors continue to arrive from Asia and the U.S. mainland.
Mario Avina, from the state of Washington, arrived Wednesday for a week-long vacation.
“I never been through a hurricane,” Avina said. “It’s my first time. I am kind of excited, so we will see how that goes.”
Travelers who have departing flights during the next few days are being asked to contact their airlines before heading to the airport.
