HONOLULU -

Former University of Hawaii Board of Regent chair Eric Martinson has resigned from his post on the board. The university says he sent a letter of resignation to Gov. Neil Abercrombie.

Martison served on the board for four years. His current term was set to expire in 2014.

The former chair held a very public position during the last year, dealing with the so-called "Wonder Blunder," in which the university was scammed out of $200,000 for what turned out to be fake Stevie Wonder concert billed a fundraiser for the athletic department.  Fallout from the scam led to the firing of former athletic director Jim Donovan and an investigation by state senators.

University of Hawaii officials released this statement on Martinson's resignation:

"Regent and former Chair Eric Martinson has tendered his resignation as a regent to the governor for personal reasons. His service to the University of Hawaii and the state is deeply appreciated and he will be greatly missed. We wish him the best and send our aloha."
