A 61-year-old visitor from Germany died while on Kauai's Kalalau Trail on Friday, according to Kauai fire officials.
The man had been hiking with a group of friends when he started feeling fatigued. Although they rested before continuing, the man collapsed on the trail near the 8-mile marker. Someone in the group administered CPR, but the man did not respond.
Seeing what had happened, a pilot with a helicopter tour company radioed the Lihue Airport air traffic control tower to report the incident and then police was notified.
A fire rescue helicopter responded at approximately 5:30 p.m. They flew to the landing zone near the 8-mile marker and walked about a quarter-mile to the scene.
The victim was placed in a Stokes litter and carried to the helicopter. The man and another hiker were flown to Princeville Airport where awaiting medics confirmed the man's death, and police officers took over the scene.
After refueling, the chopper returned to the Kalalau Trail and airlifted another hiker in the party to Princeville Airport.
