Golfer killed by falling branch at Leilehua Golf Course

One of the fallen branches at the Leilehua Golf Course.  Another fallen branch killed a 55-year-old man on Wednesday.

WAHIAWA, Hawaii -

A 55-year-old man died after he was struck by a falling branch at the Leilehua Golf Course Wednesday morning.

The man was identified by the medical examiner as Shigeru Iwamoto of Kataka, Japan.

Iwamoto was a civilian at the military golf course.  Civilians must get sponsored to play there.

The golf course was closed after the incident.

Emergency Medical Services officials say Iwamoto was struck by the branch at the first tee just before 11:30 a.m.

He was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police have opened an unattended death investigation.  The cause of death is under investigation.
