Republican candidate Duke Aiona says if elected governor, he wants to add 2,100 rental units across the state.

To do so, Aiona wants to reallocate 25 percent of the corporate income tax into the Rental Housing Trust Fund for seven years.

The fund will be used to entice developers to build affordable housing units.

"This additional funding will provide developers and builders of affordable rental with a aknown and stable funding source. The funding source is not a tax increase," said Aiona.

The legislature would need to approve the re-allocation of the money before it could happen.

Aiona says he plans on taking inventory of state lands to see if some of those rentals could be built on state property.
