A Honolulu jury has heard opening statements in the murder trial of a Hawaii pastor's son accused of going on a shooting rampage that killed a mother of 10 and left two others wounded in 2011.

HONOLULU -

The daughter of a woman shot to death at a Honolulu intersection in 2011 described seeing her mother's head jerk back and worrying that the shooter would kill her as well.

Toby Stangel is on trial, accused of shooting Tammy Nguyen, a mother of 10. Nguyen's daughter described the shooting Monday as members of their family sobbed in the courtroom.

Prosecutor Dwight Nadamoto says Stangel went on a highway shooting rampage that started at the Honolulu intersection where Nguyen was shot and ended on the freeway in Pearl City. He says Stangel shot and injured two motorists and then shot at two police officers.

Defense attorney John Schum says his client didn't have the "state of mind" required to convict him.
