A judge has requested an attorney's request for a mental evaluation for surfer Jill Hansen.
Hansen pleaded not guilty in May to a second-degree attempted murder charge. Police believe she intentionally hit a 73-year-old woman with her car at the Diamond Head Apartments on Kalakaua Avenue.
Attorney Victor Bakke is representing Hansen on the attempted murder charge and in an assault case.
Bakke asked Judge Ed Kubo to grant a mental evaluation for Hansen. The standard evaluation is by a panel of three mental health experts.
Bakke said to the judge in the courtroom on Monday he is having trouble communicating with his client regarding her defense. The prosecution did not object to the request and the judge granted the request.
Bakke also asked that the judge to have Hansen at the Hawaii State Hospital until the mental evaluation is complete. The judge took the request under advisement.
All of Hansen's cases are on hold until the mental evaluation. Hansen also has an excessive speeding case pending.
