A Hawaii man who moved to Washington D.C. three months ago found himself near the deadly shootings at the naval shipyard on Monday.

Brandon "Kaleo" Cambra was on duty for a security company at a building directly across the street from where the shootings happened, according to his mother.

Cambra is a 2008 graduate of Kapolei High School.  His mother says she spoke with him briefly about 20 minutes after the shootings.  She then learned that the building her son was posted at became a safe house where people with injuries were being taken.

"When he called, he shared about the woman that got shot in the head as well as the woman that was helping with the people that were coming in that were injured," said Hoku'olino Bollinger, Cambra's mother.

Bollinger also received a text from her son saying the building lockdown was lifted but he may have to stay on duty overnight.
