Hawaii musician sentenced for marijuana smuggling
A 33-year-old musician from Hawaii who admitted smuggling marijuana inside drums on a flight from San Francisco to Honolulu has been sentenced to three months in jail and three months of home confinement.
Brian Kusko apologized to his family in federal court Tuesday afternoon before being sentenced for possessing about 20 pounds of marijuana with intent to distribute.
Kusko was also fined $20,000.
A plea agreement says Kusko checked in three drums to a Hawaiian Airlines flight in October 2012. Transportation Security Administration screeners in San Francisco found about 23 pounds of marijuana in one drum. The TSA seized the drugs and the drum, while allowing the other drums on board.
Authorities then examined the other drums in Hawaii, finding marijuana and hashish.
