Police say the body of 46-year-old Tracey Fergerstrom was found in a home in Spokane, Wash. Tuesday morning.

Her nephew tells our affiliate she recently moved to Spokane from Hawaii.

The suspect was Jeremy Arnold, according to police.  He was facing eight years in prison, but was released on furlough in 2012, so he could get married.

Arnold never returned to prison and was a fugitive until police found him on Wednesday.  Officers surrounded his home, but he wasn't about to be arrested again without a fight.

"That person exited his vehicle with what we believe to be a firearm," said Chief Frank Straub of the Spokane Police Department.  "Our officers fearing for their safety and the safety of the community then engaged that individual."

Witnesses say a volley of gunfire followed.  Arnold went down and police surrounded him and called for paramedics.  Arnold later died.

Family members were hesitant to say Fergerstrom was dating Arnold.  But, they did say she had become very attached to his 2-year-old daughter.

Fergerstrom, a 1986 Kalaheo High graduate, left behind two daughters and a son, as well as three grandchildren.
