HONOLULU -

One of two endangered Hawaiian hawks, or i'o, that were apparently shot with a pellet gun on the Big Island was released on Monday, according to Three Ring Ranch.

Federal wildlife officials are investigating the incident.

The hawks were taken to the Three Ring Rang after they were found with the pellet gun wounds.

A hawk that was found on March 20 was treated and released.

Another hawk found on April 27 made a complete recovery and was released Monday.  The hawk immediately perched on a nearby tree.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking information from the public about what happened to the hawks, which is protected by state and federal laws.
