Hawaii-based sailor identified as Maunalua Bay drowning victim
A sailor attached with the Naval Health Clinic Hawaii died Saturday, according to Navy officials.
Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Gregory Spillman, 19, of Alexandria, Pa. died April 5. Spillman was near the "China Walls" in Maunalua Bay when he was swept out to sea by the strong currents, according to the Navy.
After being rescued, he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, despite life-saving efforts.
Spillman enlisted in the Navy in 2012 and attended Hospital Corpsman "A" School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Jan. 2013. Upon graduation he attended the Field Medical Training Battalion at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Spillman reported to Naval Health Clinic Hawaii, March 2013. His wife, an active duty sailor, is stationed at Great Lakes, Ill.
His awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
