'Stairway To Heaven' hikers rescued in Kaneohe
The Honolulu Fire Department staged a command post at Kaneohe District Park late Tuesday afternoon for a hiker rescue.
Fire crews were called just before 4 p.m. for a hiker in distress at the summit of the Koolau mountain range behind Tripler Medical Center.
Fire officials say a man and a woman, possibly in their 20s, made it to the summit of the Stairway To Heaven trail.
The man initially fell 15 feet, then another 150 feet. After the couple was airlifted to Kaneohe District Park, the man was able to walk away.
The man and woman declined treatment, but were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
