HILO, Hawaii -

Big Island police say a registered sex offender is facing three felony charges after he was accused of abducting an underage girl at knifepoint and sexually assaulting her this past weekend.

According to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald, 54-year-old Lawrence Abiley of Hilo approached the 17-year-old girl on Saturday on Kalakaua Street in Hilo.  She was able to escape when Abiley went to the bathroom.

Abiley appeared in court Monday afternoon where his public defender requested he be granted supervised release.

The judge maintained bail at $70,000.  According to court records, Abiley was convicted in 1988 on four counts of first-degree sex assault as well as rape and burglary.  He was also convicted in 2009 and 2010 for failing to register as a sex offender.

If convicted, Abiley faces up to 25 years in prison.
