Caldwell made the announcement Monday, standing by Abercrombie's side. The mayor cited their relationship on a variety of issues from transportation to homelessness.
Caldwell says he's found a willing partner in Abercrombie.
"It doesn't mean we're not going to disagree on issues, but it means that we are close enough and we trust our relationship that we can agree to disagree and come back the next week and work on issues that are important," said Caldwell.
"This is not a question of are you for or against individuals or for and against even on issues and such. This is a matter of our working relationship that has been established over a long period of time," said Abercrombie.
Caldwell said he reached out to state Sen. David Ige and Mufi Hannemann before announcing his support for Abercrombie.
Ige is Abercrombie's main Democratic challenger, while Hannemann hired Caldwell as his managing director in 2009.
