It was all thanks to students winning the first ever Bottle Cap Collection Challenge sponsored by Johnson's non-profit Kokua Hawaii Foundation.

"The students here at Mililani Ike Elementary School collected over 1,400 pounds of bottle caps with the support of their community parents," said Carol Feinga of the Kokua Hawaii Foundation.

Department of Education schools participated in the challenge, collecting more than 21,000 pounds of bottle caps.

"A lot of people don't realize the single use water bottles. You can recycle the bottle parts themselves, but the bottle caps can't be recycled. We thought it would be a good idea to bring attention to that. That is why we're doing the bottle cap project," said Johnson.

The caps were sent to California and recycled into toothbrushes and soap bottles.
"Those products – once they are done, samples of the products will be sent back to the schools so they can see what their efforts have gone to. We hope it will encourage kids to reduce the use of single use plastics," said Feinga.

For the keiki, the project and performance was a fun lesson on how to reduce, reuse and recycle.

"I learned that it is very important to recycle and if you do great things, the world will back," said Ella Tom, a Mililani Ike Elementary third grader.

Jack Johnson will be having a concert on Aug. 1 at the Waikiki Shell. Ticket sales start on Saturday at 10 a.m. for kama'aina and will be available to the general public on Sunday.
