Jury selection begins for trial of man charged with shooting two officers

Keaka D. Martin is accused of shooting and injuring two Big Island police officers in Hilo on Jan. 2.  He was charged with two counts of first-degree attempted murder, second-degree reckless endangering, place to keep a firearm, possessing a loaded firearm on a highway, two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, ownership/possession of a firearm prohibited, and altering the identification markings on a firearm.


Jury selection began Monday in the trial of Keaka Martin.

Martin faces charges of attempted murder for shooting officers Garrett Hatada and Joshua Gouveia in 2013.

Both officers were hospitalized with leg wounds, but have since returned to duty.

In December 2013, the 32-year-old voluntarily admitted to shooting himself with a 9-mm handgun as police converged on his sister's home where he was allegedly hiding.
