LAHAINA, Hawaii -

Maui County police say a 50-year-old Kahului woman died after her moped was struck behind by another vehicle Monday afternoon in Lahaina.

It happened on Honoapiilani Highway at the entrace to Puamana Beach Park at around 3:45 p.m.

Police say the moped was traveling north on Honoapiilani Highway when it stopped to make a left turn into Puamana Beach Park.  That's when the moped was struck from behind by a car driven by a 78-year-old man from Kihei.

The woman was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center where she later died.  The man in the car was treated and released with minor injuries.

The woman was identified as Mary Fletcher.

Investigators say Fletcher was wearing a helmet.  Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

This is Maui County's eighth traffic fatality in 2014 compared with four at the same time last year.  This was also the fifth traffic fatality on Maui roadways in the last 10 days.
